Talarian Republic

The Talarian Republic, a minor state in the Alpha Quadrant, is a patriarchal, militaristic society populated by a species called Talarians. Throughout the mid 24th century, the United Federation of Planets experienced persistent frictions with the Republic but was eventually able to negotiate a peace treaty.

Territory

Talar system: located within Talarian territory, the F-type system hosts the Talarian homeworld and three other planets. The Talarian home world is a habitable planet with two moons, and serves as the Republic's capital.

In the early 24th century, the Talarians held the Megara and Grazer systems. Over the conflicts of the next fifty years, the Talarians lost control of these star systems, which went on to join the Federation.

Species and Culture

The Talarians are a patriarchal society where women cannot outrank men, and where witnessing or acting in violence is culturally engrained. They emphasize a warrior-like behaviour and have a history of skirmishes along their borders, but value adherence to protocol and tradition.

Talarians are known to engage in competitive games and challenges in which the sole focus lies on winning.

Xenophobia is deeply rooted within their tradition and history, and if another species cannot be fought, it is to be avoided.

Military

The Talarians are a deeply military-minded people, with service and warrior culture embedded in their traditions. This contributed greatly to the early-24th century conflicts with the Federation, but the Talarians' military technology was and remains inferior to Starfleet. Nevertheless, their willingness to fight and the consolidation of their forces - compared to the more dispersed Starfleet - made them a challenge for the defenders of Federation territory, compounded by the Talarians' willingness to use guerilla tactics, such as booby-trapping a ship and sending out a distress call.

Today, if any rambunctious Talarian captain wishes to test his strength against a Starfleet ship, he will still likely only see success against the smallest Federation vessels.

In Play

• After historic conflicts, a clear and formal peace treaty now exists between the Federation and the Talarian Republic.
• Border defences on both sides remain substantial, and it is not unknown for a Talarian captain to test their strength against Starfleet and force the diplomats to tidy up afterwards.
