USS Oakland (NCC-75012) is a California-class Federation starship currently assigned to Fourth Fleet's Task Force 21.

History

Attack on Douglas Station (Star Trek: Lower Decks)

In 2381, the USS Oakland joined an armada of California-class starships to defend their sister ship, the USS Cerritos, from the USS Aledo, a Texas-class starship which became infected by an unhinged, faulty artificial intelligence that previously attacked Douglas Station, killing Vice Admiral Les Buenamigo. After successfully destroying the USS Aledo, the USS Oakland returned to Douglas Station.

Under New Management ("Shakedown")

In 2401, the USS Oakland was briefly under the command of Captain Walter Reynolds. The USS Oakland would also undergo a new crew rotation, including Ensign Freki Azorius as Chief Counselor, and would embark on a routine shakedown mission following updated retrofits.

Commander's Trash, Captain's Treasure ("Unexpected Horizons")

Later that year, the USS Oakland would change commands to Captain Oskar Maising, and his reluctant, newly promoted First Officer, Commander Charlotte MacColgan, who seemed to have an unwavering distaste for the California-class she's accepted with it.

Ghost in the Fog ("Impulse Drives & Jolly Rogers")

The USS Oakland was assigned to investigate the Rolor Nebula and locate the missing RV Rain-Runner, a retired Oberth-class federation surveyor. The crew was able to locate the ship, disabled deep within the nebula. After scans were completed, an away team beamed over and began their investigation, leading to the discovery of phaser-like scorch marks in the corridors. While discussing the circumstances of the RV Rain Runner, the derelict ship took severe damage from an unknown source. The away team was rescued within moments; however, the RV Rain Runner was destroyed, the USS Oakland received heavy fire from the pirate starship, and debris heavily damaged the nacelle of the USS Oakland. In the aftermath of the damage, Lieutenant Zh'Treva was confirmed killed-in-action, and Lieutenant Commander Brawley was missing-in-action. The USS Oakland then fled the nebula, heading towards Deep-Space 47 for repairs.

Refurbishing K-74 ("Old Dog, New Coat of Paint")

Captain Oskar Maising, along with the assistance from Commander Charlotte MacColgan, Lieutenant Commander Shymel Sh'Insynaph, and Lieutenant Junior Grade T'Vara, participated in the update and retrofit of the K-74, a K-class federation starbase located on the border of the Klingon Empire and Gorn Hegemony. These technological retrofits are vital to the operation of the station due to K-74 standing as a key outpost for border relations, and a launching point for missions of exploration further into volatile regions of the Beta Quadrant.

Vaadwaur Invasion ("History Never Forgets")

In 2402, during the Vaadwaur invasion of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, the USS Oakland, under the command of Captain Oskar Maising, responded to a distress signal from Narendra III. Despite being massively outnumbered and outgunned, the utility-cruiser put up a stubborn defense that saw the Vaadwaur beaten back, and the ship and crew rescued by the Klingon reinforcements, suffering severe damage.

Type-6A Shuttlecraft

The Type-6A shuttlecrafts assigned to California-class utility cruisers received their namesakes after National Parks located in in the State of California, United States of America, Earth. The Type-6A shuttlecrafts assigned to the USS Oakland were designed for short-range ship and planetary transportation. The following shuttlecrafts are assigned to the USS Oakland:

  • Golden Gate
  • Mojave
  • Pony Express
  • Sequoia
  • Whiskeytown
  • Devil's Postpile
  • Tule Lake
  • Muir Woods

Type-8 Shuttlecraft

The Type-8 shuttlecrafts are auxiliary support crafts. Type-8 shuttlecrafts offer a slightly larger interior with entry to the shuttle being through a large hatch in the rear of the craft. There were benches for passenger seating in the aft section, parallel to the rear walls, with ample room for cargo. These shuttles were utilized for short-term missions away from the starship or larger cargo shipments. Argo-Type Shuttlecraft (& MUV's)

The Argo-type shuttlecraft is a heavy cargo transport shuttle. It was accessed from a large hatch in the rear, which allowed the crew to load substantial amounts of cargo. Crew members could walk through the cargo area to the pilot's cabin. In one configuration it carried an all-terrain multipurpose utility vehicle or "MUV", a wheeled vehicle, which was designed to operate on a planet's surface. The MUV, known as the "rover", exited the shuttle through the rear hatch, which folded down to allow it to drive out onto the surface. The Argo-type shuttlecrafts received their namesakes from the Argo Navis. The Argo-type shuttlecrafts assigned to the USS Oakland received their namesakes from the constellations within Argo Navis. The MUV's received their names after the mascots from Oakland, California's various schools and universities.

The Multipurpose Utility Vehicle (MUV) has an open cockpit and tubular framework. It also featured big, off-road tires to deal with the roughest terrain. The MUV was armed with a heavy-duty phaser cannon, which was mounted at the rear and operated by a rear-seated passenger. Typical of most off-road vehicles, the MUV featured a soft suspension enabling it to maneuver around, sometimes balanced on just two wheels, and to climb very rocky or tough terrain, while at the same time providing the driver and passengers with as comfortable a ride as possible. While on the ground the MUV remained connected to the shuttle by a hand-held remote-control unit that was kept alongside a scanner on the dashboard. This made it possible for a member of the away team to pilot the shuttle remotely. The shuttle could actually be launched and flown from the MUV. This did away with the need to leave a crew member manning the shuttle, while at the same time, enabling the away teams to bring the shuttle to wherever they happened to be in the event that the shuttle was compromised, or a quick getaway was needed. Onboard the shuttle, the MUV was held firmly in place with a set of wheel clamps situated in the cargo bay. These clamps would automatically engage the vehicle, firmly holding it in place. This was essential when the MUV had to enter the shuttle while it was in flight.

Type-6A Captain's Yacht

The Captain's Yacht is a large support craft built into the design of several starships, including the California-class utility cruiser. The Captain's Yacht is docked to the underside of the saucer section. The USS Oakland's Captain's Yacht received its namesake after the 21st Century Mayor of Oakland, California, Barbara Lee. Barbara Lee was elected in 2025 and was the first black woman to serve as Mayor of Oakland.
