Cartographer's Folly
Following the Vaadwaur Invasion, the USS Leif Erikson was sent to an uncharted region of space to finish a cartography mission that had been shelved since before the Dominion War. Upon arrival to the region, they intercepted a subspace relay buoy that had been transmitting for 30 years, and followed its origin to a lifeless planet, where they discovered the ruins of a Federation ship that had been tasked with this same mission over 30 years ago, where an accident resulted in the planet's atmosphere being burned away.
On the surface of the planet, they found the remains of a Cardassian dilithium mine, which they discovered was just a cover-up for a secret Cardassian project involving gene manipulation. The project was abandoned when the planet's atmosphere was destroyed, but two of the test subjects survived in a hidden lab. One was killed in the mine after it attacked a member of the crew, the other was brought aboard the ship for testing and observation, in the hopes of rehabilitation.
The Leif Erikson was attacked by a derelict Cardassian Galor-Class vessel, which had been patrolling the system, unaware that the war had ended. When the Cardassian ship attacked, the test subject was triggered, and escaped containment, killing a nurse in the process. It was eventually neutralized outside Main Engineering. The derelict ship and it's tired captain returned home after Captain Bowman presented irrefutable proof the war was ended, but not before Captain Bowman provided rations and supplies for the Cardassian crew.
