Federation Class

The Federation-class dreadnought was a large command cruiser developed in the 2270s to serve as a deterrant to renewed Klingon and Romulan aggression. Compared to the Constitution-class heavy cruiser, the Federation had additional weapons, a unique saucer section that moved the bridge to the center of the hull, a third nacelle, and a large aft sensor dish mirroring the forward deflector. Developing this class was controversial at the time—as was the development nearly a century later of the Dreadnought class—and like her successor, this design saw only limited production before being cancelled.
