USS Anthemius (NCC-83013) is a Obena-class Federation starship currently assigned to Fourth Fleet's Task Force 72 as its flagship. The pride of Minos Korva, this prestigious vessel serves in the capacity as Task Force Flagship in addition to its role as the prime platform for conducting large – scale diplomatic missions and extending the United Federation of Planet's policy & influence through ‘soft – diplomacy’ and the extension of humanitarian aid.

Design & Layout

Launched in 2401, the Anthemius is one of the newest Obena-class Emissaries to emerge from the Avalon Fleet Yards and, although she is a thoroughly modern vessel of new design, her graceful lines are intentionally reminiscent of those of the venerable Excelsior-class of old and evoke memories of an era where Starfleet held sway as the pre-eminent arbiter of peace and diplomacy in gentler times.

With systems more reminiscent of the Sovereign-class, the Anthemius is both surprisingly nimble despite its size and well protected by modern regenerative shield technology. Built with peace in mind, the armament aboard the Obena-class is moderate, but entirely sufficient for the ship to hold its own to protect its crew and onboarded dignitaries, but it is more common to see a ship of this type shepherded by more martially – capable escorts if its course intends to take her into harm’s way.

With capacious hold – space and access to industrial replicators, the Anthemius is well situated to both missions of engineering support and administration of humanitarian aid. Coupled with a respectable compliment of small – craft, this makes the ship a logical choice when the Federation seeks to further its diplomatic credentials through the exercise of ‘soft-power’ activities to win over hearts and minds.

As befits a vessel often tasked to lead First Contact operations, the Anthemius has a well – equipped science department and lab facilities that are geared towards cultural observation & analysis and often hosts visiting teams schooled in disciplines such as cultural anthropology and xeno-lingusitics as they seek to be the first to reach out and greet the inhabitants of strange new worlds.

But it is in the field of diplomacy that the Anthemius truly shines. With extensive guest and VIP quarters that can be configured to support delegates from multiple world – environment types, holo – configurable break-out rooms and an extensive array of conference, concert hall, plenary, ballrooms, arboretum, reception areas and meeting spaces – the ship is designed around the ethos of bringing disparate parties together in convivial surrounds to achieve the ends of peace and harmony.

Mission Operations

Diplomacy

Foremost, the Anthemius is intended to project a lasting impression of both benevolence and quiet power in the interests of nurturing peaceful negotiation and understanding. More than able to host complex multi-party talks, trade negotiations, diplomatic summits and a range of other vital congress, the Anthemius is dispatched when Bravo Fleet wish to signal that they are taking interest in a particular issue seriously. The ship has a small, permanent onboarded contingent from the Diplomatic Corps (including a Federation Consul) and routinely acts as a Diplomatic Courier, carrying diplomats and VIPs in style, comfort and safety.

Flagship

As befitting a vessel at the heart of a Task Force committed to diplomatic operations, the Anthemius serves in the capacity of Flagship for Task Force 72. With a separate flag – bridge and access to powerful and capable communications equipment, the Anthemius is well suited to hosting a Flag – officer and acting as the core coordinator for fleet operations.

First Contact

Designed from the keel – up to provide a premier platform in the support of First Contact operations, the Anthemius has both standing science facilities to host a core team and visiting specialists from multiple scientific disciplines and power computer processing and storage infrastructure to aid in the recording of billions of terabytes of collected data.

Engineering Support

Often embarking teams from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, the Anthemius boasts an array of Industrial Replicators, workshops, cargo bays and other facilities that enable the vessel to stage complex engineering assignments in safety and support both First Contact and humanitarian aid missions.

Humanitarian Aid

When the call arises, the Anthemius stands ready to extend a hand in assistance. In addition to its engineering, cargo and shuttlecraft assets, the vessel has state-of-the-art medical facilities and is able to holographically configure or repurpose many internal spaces to enable casualty overflow or evacuation accommodation. A large number of ‘next – gen’ EMH support is available to assist in triage or mass-casualty response.

Auxiliary Vessels

The Anthemius features a single, large shuttle bay – situated aft on the saucer and linking directly to the Cargo Bays that supports the operation of 4 x Runabouts and 12 x Shuttles (usually a 50/50 mix of personnel and cargo shuttles) to support operations.

History

Commissioned in 2399 and launched from the Avalon Fleet Yards in 2401, the USS Anthemius is one of the newest Obena – class emissaries to join Bravo Fleet and was due to be assigned to duty with Task Force 72, but this deployment was postponed when the ship was called to assist with direct diplomatic negotiations with the Cardassian Union in the aftermath of the Labyrinth crisis. In 2402, the vessel was formally accepted into Task Force 72 and assumed the mantle of TF Flagship from the USS K’Ehleyr. She is based out of Starbase 72 in the Minos Korva system.

As the Task Force Flagship she is dispatched to ‘fly-the-flag' missions for the Federation and her very presence reassures all that Starfleet places great value in whatever engagement she is dispatched to deploy to.

• She is a prime choice for conducting First Contact Missions.

• Whilst the Obena-class is more than capable of defending herself and her crew, this is not a vessel primarily deployed in a tactical role.
