USS Saturn (NCC-91807) is a Sutherland-class research cruiser assigned to the Fourth Fleet and was at one time a part of Arcturus Wayfinding Squadron. Newly built, her launch from Avalon Fleet Yards was delayed by three months due to the need to remove systems related to Fleet Formation Mode following the disaster that was Frontier Day 2401. Her role within Arcturus Squadron was to conduct both follow-up studies of interesting scientific phenomena and second contact missions following the faster vessels of the squadron. Now her services is needed elsewhere, she has been assigned to Hecate Station near the Klingon borders to continue its research of the natural border named Grim Wall.
Configuration
Saturn is equipped with the standard sensor pod developed for the Sutherland class. Hecate Station retains a tactical pod on hand, which could be fitted to Saturn within 72 hours.
Namesake
In Ancient Greek mythology, Saturn, a god of agriculture, was the father of Jupiter and the namesake of the sixth planet in the Sol system, a gas giant noted for its rings. While USS Saturn can ultimately trace its name back to this god, it is actually named for a family of medium, heavy, and super heavy launch vehicles developed by NASA which ultimately carried the first crewed missions to Earth's moon, Luna. An image of a Saturn V rocket carrying Apollo 11, the first of these missions, is featured on the ship's seal.
One Earth Starfleet vessel and two Federation Starfleet vessels have borne the name Saturn prior to the current iteration:
- Saturn - NCC-131 - Daedalus-class cruiser and transport
- 2143-2157 (Destroyed during the Earth-Romulan War)
- USS Saturn - NCC-1405 - Hoover-class cruiser
- 2240-2261 (Decommissioned, later upcycled into NCC-28400)
- USS Saturn - NCC-28400 - Ambassador-class emissary
- 2340-2399 (Decommissioned, upcycled into NCC-91807)
